Abstract

In this study, 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan (BAF) was employed as a furan-based diamine chain extender in a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/polyurea hybrid system. Owing to the planar aromatic-like structure and polar heteroatom of the furan ring, distinct intermolecular interactions are expected. The chemical structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. By systematically varying the molar fraction of BAF relative to conventional diol chain extenders, the effects of BAF content on phase separation and hydrogen-bonding interactions were investigated. Mechanical properties, including tensile strength, elastic modulus, and elongation at break, were evaluated as a function of BAF content. The results demonstrate that furan-based diamine chain extenders offer promising potential as sustainable and high-performance alternatives to conventional aromatic chain extenders in advanced TPU systems.
