Abstract
This study reports the development of a halogen-free flame retardant synergist for polymer applications and evaluates its performance in flame-retardant systems. The synergist was combined with various main flame retardants in polyolefin matrices, including homo and copolymer polypropylene, as well as in PA6 and PBT.
In thin polyolefin films, the sulfenamide-based synergist showed self-extinguishing behavior without a main flame retardant, satisfying DIN 4102-1. When combined with phosphonate flame retardants, a VTM-0 rating was achieved. In thick specimens (1.6 mm), the synergist acted as a booster, enabling a V-0 rating in homo polypropylene with phosphonate and V-2 ratings in homo and copolymer polypropylene with hypophosphite or phosphinate systems.
Overall, the synergist reduced burning time and main flame retardant usage, indicating its potential as a cost-effective flame-retardant solution.
