Abstract

To replace hazardous PFAS in food packaging, this study presents eco-friendly barrier coatings using a surfactant-free nanogel system. A sequential polymerization creates core-shell architectures with colloidal stability and barrier properties. The first phase establishes kinetic control of cationic seeds (DMAA/DEAEMA/TEGDMA). Batch and starved-feed processes are compared to optimize monodispersity, which is critical for minimizing coating defects. The cationic DEAEMA component enables self-stabilization in aqueous media. In the second phase, these seeds serve as templates for hydrophobic shell formation (IBOA/2-OA). Upon drying, deprotonation of DEAEMA triggers a transition from a hydrophilic dispersion to a hydrophobic barrier film. Unlike PFAS- or surfactant-based systems, this approach leverages intrinsic pH-responsive transitions for aqueous processability and dry-state barrier performance.
