Abstract
Biocatalysts show high substrate specificity and catalytic efficiency under mild conditions, but their single-use nature limits scalability, requiring reusable immobilization systems. Here, we present an alginate-based Janus microbead platform fabricated via a centrifugal process, providing compartmentalized microenvironments for independent microbial immobilization. The Janus microbeads exhibited clearly separated hemispherical structures. Notably, at the single-bead, microalgae and Escherichia coli were individually encapsulated, and microbial growth within the beads was confirmed through activity-based evaluations. These results indicate that the platform enables microbial compartmentalization and provides a basis for inducing complementary biological activity. With their reusability and versatility, these Janus microbeads serve as a sustainable immobilization platform for biocatalysts with applications in agriculture, biomedical engineering, and clean energy fields.
