Abstract
Hydrophilic polymers form stable hydration layers that inhibit marine organism adhesion. However, zwitterionic coatings exhibit marine sediment adsorption, reducing antifouling performance in practical marine environments. To address this, amphiphilic copolymers composed of an anionic monomer, sulfopropyl methacrylate (SPMA), and a hydrophobic monomer, trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA), were synthesized via RAFT polymerization and immobilized on surfaces through metal-ion-mediated anchoring. Poly(SPMAx-co-TFEMAy) with various compositions were evaluated for sediment adsorption and diatom adhesion. Among copolymers with similar molecular weights, increasing TFEMA content led to reduced antifouling performance, indicating that the anionic SPMA component plays a dominant role in governing marine antifouling behavior.
