Abstract

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is a promising cathode for lithium–sulfur batteries owing to its intrinsic suppression of polysulfide dissolution. However, stable operation of SPAN under ultrahigh mass loading remains challenging. Here, a non-solvent-induced phase inversion strategy is employed to fabricate thick, porous SPAN cathodes with vertically interconnected channels, enabling efficient ion/electron transport and accommodation of volume changes. The resulting electrode achieves 91.02% capacity retention over 20 cycles at an ultrahigh loading of 62.95 mg cm⁻². Furthermore, the use of a LiFSI-based localized high-concentration electrolyte enhances interfacial stability, delivering 1348.71 mAh g⁻¹ after 300 cycles at 2C and 950.14 mAh g⁻¹ after 300 cycles at 5C. This work presents a simple and effective strategy for constructing thick, high-loading SPAN cathodes.
