Abstract

We investigated the role of polymer side chains in dopant diffusion during solution sequential doping of conjugated polymer thin films, with a focus on side-chain-free systems. A polythiophene derivative with thermocleavable side chains, P3ET, was used, and solution sequential doping with F4TCNQ was performed on both side-chain-containing films and side-chain-free films obtained by thermocleavage. Although a comparable amount of F4TCNQ was incorporated in both cases, its spatial distribution differed significantly depending on the presence of side chains. In side-chain-free films, F4TCNQ showed pronounced localization near the film surface, indicating severely restricted dopant diffusion. This behavior is attributed to reduced side-chainsolvent interactions and suppressed polymer film swelling in the absence of side chains.
