Study on environmental stress cracking of ABS under mechanical stress and oil exposure

Abstract

Acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) is widely used in various industries owing to its excellent mechanical properties and processability. However, exposure to chemical agents combined with mechanical stress can lead to premature failure during long-term use. These conditions are associated with environmental stress cracking (ESC), and a comprehensive understanding of the ESC behavior is essential for improving durability.
 In this study, ESC conditions were simulated by exposing ABS to oil under static bending stress. The fracture surface morphology of ABS was examined to observe fracture behavior associated with oil penetration. Furthermore, oil penetration was investigated through chemical analysis to determine whether it occurred through physical absorption or chemical interaction. These analyses provided insight into the degradation behavior of ABS under combined oil exposure and static mechanical stress.
