PAN-Assisted Carbonization and Tension-Induced Microstructure Control in PAN/Graphene Fibers

Abstract

Controlling microstructures (crystalline structures and microvoids )is crucial for developing strong graphene fibers (GFs). While high-temperature graphitization produces strong GFs, structural defects limit ultimate mechanical strength. We enhanced GF mechanical strength by controlling fiber microstructure. We hybridized GF by incorporating polyacrylonitrile (PAN) into graphene oxide (GO) solution and applied tensile force during 800 °C annealing. PAN acts as a binder, facilitates microstructure rearrangement, and undergoes directional carbonization via graphene's catalytic effect, reducing microvoids and improving crystallite alignment. The resulting hybrid GFs achieved 1.10 GPa strength without extreme-temperature graphitization. This work demonstrates that controlling nanostructure alignment is an efficient strategy for achieving graphene's inherent performance characteristics in multidimensional structures.
