Non-nano Cerium Oxide Particles as a Multifunctional Cosmetic Ingredient for UV Protection and Oxidative Stress Control

Abstract

Inorganic UV filters are widely used in sunscreen formulations because of their high photostability and broad UV protection. However, some conventional inorganic materials generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) under UV irradiation, raising concerns regarding oxidative safety and increasing the demand for materials can provide UV protection while mitigating UV-induced oxidative stress. In this study, non-nano ceria particles (COPs) were developed as a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient combining effective UV shielding and strong antioxidant properties. To address safety and regulatory concerns related to potential skin penetration, COPs were designed in the non-nano size range (>100 nm) without penetrating the bloodstream. The particles exhibited effective UV shielding performance across both the UVB (290–320 nm) and UVA (320–400 nm) regions and showed ROS-scavenging properties in UV-irradiated cells, indicating their potential for broad-spectrum UV protection with improved safety.
