Development of Crosslinked Zwitterionic PEMs for High-Performance

Abstract

Zwitterion-based proton exchange membranes have attracted significant attention as next-generation materials due to their excellent water retention and enhanced proton conductivity. In this study, crosslinked PEMs were fabricated via a solution casting method, with membrane composition and crosslinking degree systematically controlled to optimize water uptake and dimensional stability. The introduction of zwitterionic moieties imparted strong hydrophilicity, leading to improved moisture retention and the formation of continuous proton transport pathways. Key processing parameters, including temperature, relative humidity, and thermal treatment, were carefully adjusted to tailor the physical and electrochemical properties of the membranes. The prepared membranes are currently being evaluated for proton conductivity and electrochemical stability using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear sweep voltammetry to assess their potential as high-performance PEM materials.
