Abstract

Polyimides (PIs) are widely used as gas-separation membranes due to high Tg and chemical resistance; commercial Matrimid® is a benchmark. Yet glassy PIs are limited by the permeability–selectivity trade-off and tight chain packing from interchain interactions (CTC), reducing permeability and solution processability. Here, BTDA-based copolyimides were synthesized by replacing part of DAPI with amide-containing DABA to strengthen H-bonding/CTC and tune packing. By varying the DAPI/DABA ratio, FFV, porosity and CTC intensity were adjusted for H2/CH4 separation. Structures were confirmed by NMR and FT-IR, and thermal properties were evaluated by DSC and TGA. Density-derived FFV was correlated with H2 and CH4 single-gas permeability to establish structure–packing–transport relationships for hydrogen purification membranes
