Abstract

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are promising next-generation emitters: their external electroluminescence quantum efficiency (ELQE) has climbed from 0.76% to >30% in the past decade. Yet many designs neglect photon recycling, where emitted photons are reabsorbed and re-emitted, boosting extraction from trapped modes.
We review optical approaches to strengthen photon recycling and argue that minimizing parasitic absorption is crucial. As a demonstration, we thin the ITO electrode from 150 nm to 15 nm, raising average ELQE from (19.5 ± 1.0)% to (22.0 ± 0.9)%—a 13.0% relative gain. Optical simulations and PL mapping attribute the improvement mainly to increased photon recycling, highlighting it as a guideline for future high-efficiency PeLEDs.
