Silica-Based Magneto-responsive Core-Shell Nanoparticle Suspensions: Synthesis and Characterization

Abstract

Magnetically responsive nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention in diverse biomedical applications, including soft actuators, delivery systems, and magnetic resonance imaging, owing to their intrinsic field-responsive magnetic behavior. In this study, silica-based magneto-responsive core-shell nanoparticles with various morphologies were synthesized by varying the concentration of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Stearic acid-modified Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were synthesized via a co-precipitation method, followed by the formation of a silica shell through hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS using the Stöber process. The structural and thermal properties of the resulting core-shell nanoparticles were characterized, and their magneto-responsive performance was investigated. Furthermore, magnetorheological fluids incorporating the optimized core-shell nanoparticles were prepared, and their magnetorheological properties were characterized under various external magnetic fields.
