Abstract
Hydrocarbon-based proton exchange membranes commonly suffer from excessive swelling induced by water uptake, resulting in degraded mechanical stability and dimensional integrity. In this study, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was blended with cellulose acetate (CA) and chemically crosslinked using sulfosuccinic acid (SSA), which functions as both a crosslinking agent and an additional proton-conducting moiety.
The incorporation of SSA formed a robust crosslinked network that effectively suppressed membrane swelling while significantly enhancing mechanical strength. Furthermore, the sulfonic acid groups introduced by SSA provided supplementary proton transport sites, enabling stable proton conductivity over a wide range of humidity conditions. The presence of CA further reinforced the polymer matrix, contributing to improved structural durability.
