Abstract
Controlling Au dispersion on TiO2 photocatalysts remains difficult because metal loading, pore structure, and particle size often change together, obscuring the origin of catalytic performance. Here, we propose a TiO2 aerogel platform for directly comparing how surface functional groups influence Au deposition and photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition. Pristine, cellulose-modified, and dialdehyde cellulose-modified TiO2 aerogels, denoted PTA, CTA, and DTA, were designed to retain similar porous frameworks while varying surface chemistry. Au was loaded at a fixed 1 wt% to produce AuPTA, AuCTA, and AuDTA. We hypothesize that cellulose-derived species, especially aldehyde-rich DTA, promote Au nucleation and anchoring, yielding smaller and more uniformly dispersed Au nanoparticles. N2 isotherm, TGA, ICP-OES, and TEM will be correlated with photocatalytic performance to determine whether activity trends mainly originate from Au dispersion rather than bulk structural differences.
