Abstract
As a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics, this study reports the fabrication of porous composites derived from cellulose and bio-based phenolic resins synthesized from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). Anisotropic cellulose foams were fabricated via two-dimensional directional melt crystallization (2D DMC), where directionally crystallized solvents were removed by freeze drying to generate aligned porous structures. A sodium hydroxide–catalyzed cardanol–formaldehyde system was subsequently introduced as a reactive binder and thermally cured within the cellulose framework. The resulting composites preserved the oriented porous morphology produced by the DMC process and exhibited improved resistance to deformation compared to pure cellulose foams. This approach highlights the potential of combining ceramic process–inspired fabrication with reactive biodegradable components for cellulose-based porous composites.
