Abstract
Hydrovoltaic energy generation provides a promising pathway for sustainable electricity harvesting through water–solid interactions. In this study, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were combined with carbon materials to systematically evaluate the effects of carbon type and particle size on device performance. Activated carbon with different particle sizes and biomass derived bio-char were incorporated into CNF based composite structures. The hydrophilic CNF network facilitates continuous water transport and ion migration, while carbon materials act as conductive components for charge collection. Under ambient moisture conditions, the optimized cellulose/activated carbon composite generated an open circuit voltage of approximately 0.5 V and a short circuit current of around 10 µA. These results demonstrate that tailoring carbon material properties is an effective strategy for improving the performance of cellulose based hydrovoltaic energy generators.
