Abstract
Herein, SiO2-coated hollow black TiO2 shell (HBT@Si) was designed as polarizability-tailored electrorheological (ER) materials. A SiO2@TiO2 core shell structure was prepared and the reduction degree of TiO2 was tuned into nine levels (D0 to D8). To prepare hollow TiO2, the SiO2 was removed via an ultrasonication-assisted alkaline etching. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) played a pivotal role in enabling the uniform deposition of an additional SiO2 layer on the TiO2 surface to attain various HBT@Si. The HBT@Si materials were dispersed in silicone oil to prepare ER fluids. Consequently, the HBT-D8@Si-based ER fluid shows ca. 4.8-fold ER efficiency enhancement than HBT-D0@Si-based ER fluids. Such improvement in ER performance is attributed to the synergistic effect between the high polarizability of black TiO2 and the effective tailoring of electrical leakage by the SiO2 layer.
