Abstract

All-solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries are promising candidates for energy storage due to their high energy density and theoretical capacity (3680 mAh g⁻¹). However, Li metal anodes suffer dendrite growth and electrolyte decomposition from large volume changes, leading to unstable electrode-electrolyte interfaces. We designed an imine-based vitrimer solid polymer electrolyte to regulate interfacial reactions in Li metal batteries and examined SEI formation by cryo-TEM. Cryo-TEM revealed a uniform SEI layer and a stabilized interphase that withstands mechanical stress and mitigates interfacial degradation. Vitrimers possess dynamic covalent adaptable networks (CANs) that enable bond reformation under external stimuli. Dynamic imine bonds facilitate crack repair, and catechol groups enhance interfacial adhesion via hydrogen bonding, stabilizing the interface. This work offers a promising strategy for safer, more durable all-solid-state Li metal batteries.
