Effect of Talc Loading and Biaxial Stretching on the Mechanical and Oxygen Barrier Properties of TPS/PBAT Biodegradable Films

Abstract

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is a biodegradable polymer widely used for packaging, but its mechanical strength and oxygen barrier performance are still limited. In this study, talc is introduced to further control structure development in TPS/PBAT films, acting as a nucleating agent for the PBAT matrix and as a platelet-type filler that may orient during stretching. TPS/PBAT blend films containing talc at different loadings will be prepared using a twin-screw extruder and then processed by biaxial stretching. Mechanical properties are evaluated using UTM, thermal behavior and crystallization are analyzed by DSC, film morphology is examined by SEM, and oxygen barrier performance is assessed by oxygen permeability measurements. This study aims to systematically compare the effects of talc loading and simultaneous biaxial stretching, and to clarify the links between structure, properties, and oxygen barrier performance in TPS/PBAT biodegradable films, to support the development of high-performance and sustainable materials for flexible packaging.
