Abstract

Plastic deformation is the permanent and irreversible distortion of a material when it exceeded its yield via stress. When polymers undergo plastic deformation, recovery to original shape is limited. This process involves irreversible damage, including stress whitening, due to changes in the internal structure.
In this study, these limitations of typical polymers were overcome through structural design based on 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, neopentyl glycol, and poly(trimethylene ether) glycol. The material recovered its original shape even beyond the yield point and exhibited reversible whitening behavior during repeated tensile relaxation. It also achieved a Young’s modulus of 444.7 MPa and an elongation at break of 574.8%, demonstrating high stiffness and high elasticity simultaneously. These results challenge the conventional perception that plastic deformation and whitening are permanent, and propose a strategy to realize both high resilience and transparency recovery.
