Scalable Manufacturing of Structural Color: Shear-Induced Fabrication of Colloidal Photonic Crystal Film

Abstract
Structural color films enable stimuli-responsive sensing, yet scalable fabrication of non-close-packed colloidal crystals is difficult because conventional methods require precise control of interparticle repulsion. In this talk, I present a simple, scalable route based on melt-shear assembly of rigid-core/deformable-shell nanoparticles. By tailoring the polymeric shell composition, mechanical compliance and optical response are readily tuned. The melt-shear process is compatible with continuous roll-to-roll manufacturing, enabling large-area films. This platform delivers bright structural colors with tunable solvato- and mechanochromism, and offers a general manufacturing pathway for functional structural-color films for aesthetics, security, and adaptive optical surfaces.
