Abstract
Membrane-based gas separation is pivotal to carbon capture, yet bridging the material-device performance gap is challenging. In mixed-matrix membranes, random orientation of anisotropic fillers compromises performance efficiency by creating tortuous paths. This limitation is acute for metal-organic frameworks with anisotropic morphologies or 1D channels, where misalignment impedes flow. Herein, we transform labyrinthine pathways into direct "Hyperloops" via macroscopic MOF alignment. Exploiting the magnetic anisotropy of Dy5L6(OH)3, we achieved vertical alignment in a 6FDA-DAM matrix under a magnetic field. Aligned membranes exhibited 1502 Barrer CO2 permeability, a 51% enhancement over random counterparts, without sacrificing selectivity. This confirms the formation of diffusion highways, overcoming the permeability-selectivity trade-off. This work establishes a rational strategy to translate intrinsic material potential into superior membrane performance.
