Abstract

Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) is a functional polymer whose epoxy side groups readily undergo fast and selective ring-opening reactions with thiols, particularly under basic conditions; however, such modifications are typically carried out in solution. In this study, a solvent-free thiol–epoxy post-polymerization modification of PGMA was achieved via mechanochemical ball milling.
Thiols with different structures and both organic and inorganic base catalysts were examined to evaluate the effects of base conditions on reaction rate, efficiency, and chemoselectivity. The results show that PGMA epoxy groups undergo rapid and selective ring-opening under basic ball-milling conditions compared to solution-based processes, with reaction behavior strongly dependent on thiol structure and base type.
This work demonstrates that mechanochemical ball-milling provides an efficient and sustainable platform for solvent-free thiol–epoxy post-polymerization modification of PGMA.
