Abstract

Conventional organic liquid electrolytes used in lithium secondary batteries still do not meet the high energy density demands of electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Moreover, their flammability, thermal instability, and limited electrochemical stability can trigger thermal runaway under abuse conditions such as overcharging or internal short circuits, leading to decomposition of both electrodes and electrolyte.
Here, we employ poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) as the polymer matrix for solid polymer electrolyte. The methyl groups on PPO are brominated and subsequently crosslinked with a diamine containing oxyethylene repeating units to improve thermal stability and facilitate lithium-ion transport. The number of oxyethylene units is systematically varied to elucidate its influence on ionic conductivity. Also, the crosslinking density is tuned to investigate its effects on thermal stability and electrochemical properties.
