Synthesis of Novel Buffer Materials for Advanced Performance and Stability in Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract

The role of a buffer layer in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is important for improving device performance and long-term stability. In this study, we synthesized novel buffer materials, BCP-m1 and BCP-m2, through the substitution of phenyl and p-tolyl groups at the 2,9-positions of the phenanthroline core via a one-step Suzuki coupling reaction. Due to the enhanced planarity and increased binding energy with the electron transport layer compared to conventional bathocuproine (BCP), PSCs incorporating the BCP-m series exhibited higher power conversion efficiency than those using BCP. Notably, the devices retained 80% of their initial efficiency after 50 hours of continuous illumination under ambient conditions (AM 1.5G, 45% RH).
