Abstract
Liquid crystalline polymer networks (LCPNs) with programmable molecular alignment enable self-sustained, shape-morphing actuation under light irradiation. However, most previous demonstrations of self-sustained locomotion have relied on sequential or periodic light control rather than continuous irradiation. Here, we present an automated alignment strategy for the rapid fabrication of LCPNs with a gradually varying nematic director field. The resulting LCPNs were patterned into various geometries to demonstrate self-sustained locomotion under continuous light irradiation. Furthermore, the LCPNs were actuated in liquid environments, exhibiting efficient wave-based propulsion and controlled motion in fluids. These results demonstrate self-sustained locomotion under continuous light irradiation by employing gradual nematic director field and geometric design.
