Stabilizing Thin Li Metal Anodes via Salt-Coated Separators: An Operando–Computational Approach to Interface Engineering

Abstract

The rapid expansion of the electric vehicle market is driving demand for high-energy-density lithium batteries. Thin lithium metal anodes (~20 μm), with their high volumetric energy density, are considered key candidates for next-generation batteries. However, commercialization is limited by electrolyte decomposition and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation. These challenges are particularly critical for thin lithium, where the limited inventory accelerates irreversible losses and shortens cycle life. In this study, we propose a strategy to stabilize the Li metal/electrolyte interface by applying a separator coated with highly concentrated LiFSI salt. Operando Raman spectroscopy, combined with DFT and MD simulations, confirms suppressed solvent decomposition and the formation of stable solvation structures. Symmetric cell experiments further demonstrate reduced nucleation overpotential and excellent cycling stability exceeding 200 cycles.
