Abstract

This work developed the multifunctional soybean oil (MSO) compatibilizer for PBAT/TPS 70/30 films and elucidated how interfacial coupling improves mechanical and biodegradable properties. MSO was synthesized from soybean oil via controlled partial ring opening during epoxidation to introduce epoxy, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups. Structure and functionality were confirmed by NMR and FTIR. PBAT/TPS blends with MSO (PBTMs) were fabricated by twin screw extrusion and characterized with mechanical properties and biodegradability. The increase in MSO increased interfacial adhesion and reduced interfacial tension, which promoted tensile strength of PBAT/TPS with MSO films. The optimized composition, 5 wt percent MSO (PBTM5), achieved 37.5 MPa tensile strength and about 765 percent elongation at break, surpassing LDPE tested under identical conditions. Rheology showed improved phase cooperation in Han plots and reduced tan δ. Under the biodegradable test (ISO 20200), aerobic composting, PBTM5 reached 75.6 percent disintegration at 60 days, demonstrating that mechanical gains did not compromise compostability.
