Abstract

Twisted and coiled artificial muscle yarns are promising for soft robotics and wearables, offering large, reversible motion in compact forms. Electrochemical CNT yarn muscles operate at low voltage with high efficiency, but direct-spun CNTFs can show limited durability and electrochemical creep. Here, we develop reinforced composite yarn muscles (RCYMs) by coating coiled direct-spun CNTF yarn muscles with ionically conductive PVDF-co-HFP. The coating boosts mechanical properties by 38% without compromising electrochemical performance, suppresses irreversible elongation after discharge, and extends stable cycling by >3×. Molecular dynamics pull-out simulations suggest PVDF-co-HFP increases interfacial shear resistance, limiting charge-assisted CNT sliding and bundle deformation, thereby mitigating creep. These results provide a practical route to robust and scalable electrochemical CNTF yarn muscles, with strong potential for soft robotic and wearable actuation.
