High performance organic gas sensor with side chain engineered conjugated polymers

Abstract

The rapid development of wearable electronics has accelerated the demand for flexible and solution-processable gas sensors. While organic electronic materials offer intrinsic mechanical flexibility, their practical application is often limited by environmental instability and a heavy reliance on toxic organic solvents during fabrication. Consequently, developing a material strategy that simultaneously ensures high performance and environmental safety is critical.
In this study, we investigate side-chain engineering as a pivotal solution to these challenges. By employing a series of thiophene-based polymers functionalized with diverse groups we systematically analyze the fundamental correlation between chemical structure and sensor characteristics. This work elucidates how strategic side-chain selection can effectively overcome the limitations of conventional organic electronics, offering a pathway toward sustainable, water-processable, and high-performance sensing platforms.
