Hierarchical Bundle Growth of Conjugated Polymer Nanowires via In-Situ LP-TEM

Abstract

Organic electronic performance is governed by π-conjugated polymer (CP) organization in solution. Crystalline CPs assemble by seed-and-growth CDSA, enabling stacking for intrachain charge transport (ICT) and charge-transfer complex (CTC) formation, but over-crystallization causes embrittlement and a trade-off with mechanical robustness. 
To bypass drying and post-mortem artifacts and resolve intrinsic kinetics with time-resolved causality, we use in situ liquid-phase TEM (LP-TEM) to track co-assembly of diblock nanowires with triblock copolymers. LP-TEM captures tie-molecule infiltration, inter-nanowire bridging, and bundle alignment that establish electronic connectivity. Tie molecules form percolating bridges between crystalline domains while preserving amorphous compliance. Their spatial distribution governs bundle growth and liquid-phase CTC efficiency, providing a design rule to couple crystallinity, connectivity, and toughness and mitigate this trade-off.
