Abstract

Zwitterionic polymers have recently gained attention as functional electrolyte materials due to their strong hydration ability, which can effectively regulate water activity and suppress undesired side reactions.  Herein, we report a zwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte based on 3-(dimethyl(2-methacryloyloxyethyl) ammonium) propane sulfonate (DMAPS), designed to leverage the sulfonate groups that strongly bind free water molecules. This hydration effect significantly reduces the amount of free water in the electrolyte.A notable advantage of this design is the direct incorporation of zinc salts during the gelation process, eliminating the need for pre-swelling or salt-loading steps.  The resulting zwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte demonstrates improved structural robustness, suppressed side reactions, and enhanced electrochemical performance, underscoring the critical role of zwitterionic functionality in advanced hydrogel electrolyte design for ZIBs.
