Abstract

Polyurethane foams (PUFs) are widely used in many applications, including vehicles, construction, and furniture. However, most of current PUFs are primarily derived from petroleum-based polyols, and consist of permanent cross-linked networks, hindering efficient recycling. Accordingly, there is a growing need for the development of sustainable polyurethane foam materials. In this work, a bio-based polyol derived from cashew nutshell liquid was synthesized and used for the preparation of PUFs. The unique hindered urea bonds (HUB) were intentionally incorporated during the foaming, thereby enabling reshaping under reasonable conditions. The resultant PUFs were characterized in terms of physical, morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties. In addition, the stress-relaxation behavior and mechanical performance were retained even after hot-press reprocessing, demonstrating the excellent reprocessability of the HUB-based PUU network.
