Abstract
Polyimide (PI) is widely used in advanced electronic applications owing to its outstanding thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. However, the dielectric constant (k) of conventional aromatic PIs remains higher than required for next-generation integrated circuits. According to the Clausius–Mossotti equation, k can be reduced by decreasing molecular polarizability and lowering the density of polarizable units per unit volume.
In this study, low-dielectric PIs were developed through molecular design to increase fractional free volume (FFV). Three PIs were synthesized from fluorinated 6FDA and diamine monomers containing various alicyclic moieties. These sterically hindered, non-planar units disrupt chain packing and increase free volume, thereby decreasing dipole density and dielectric constant. The polymers were characterized by NMR, FT-IR, DSC, TGA, and dielectric measurements to elucidate structure–property relationships.
