Abstract
In this study, an eco-friendly superhydrophobic surface was developed by generating a thin layer of chemically modified lignin particles on glass substrates. Two distinct alkyl isocyanates, hexyl isocyanate and octadecyl isocyanate, were subjected to a reaction with neat lignin particles, resulting in the formation of urethane linkages via the reaction between the isocyanate and the hydroxyl groups present in the lignin. A thin layer of modified lignin particles was then formed on glass substrates using epoxy resin. Consequently, the superhydrophobic nature of the lignin particles was effectively established, evidenced by a significant rise in water contact angles to almost 150°. The phenomenon stemmed from the distinct needle-like surface structures of alkyl chains, which form on lignin particles during their preparation. Furthermore, the mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and self-cleaning characteristics of the superhydrophobic surface were thoroughly examined.
