Robust 2D graphene/liquid metal composite sheets with hierarchical networks for high-performance Joule-heating and enhanced thermal management

Abstract

Two-dimensional graphene is a premier material for next-generation thermal management due to its exceptional properties. We report a robust composite sheet with a hierarchical network, fabricated via layer-by-layer assembly of graphene and liquid metal particles (LMPs). In this study, LMPs serve as conductive and adhesive bridges between graphene layers. The spontaneous oxide layer on LMPs induces strong interfacial adhesion, ensuring structural stability and establishing efficient thermal pathways in both in-plane and through-plane directions. Our results demonstrate that the strong interaction between liquid metal and graphene creates sophisticated heat conduction networks, enabling superior Joule-heating efficiency and thermal dissipation. Furthermore, thermal conductivities are precisely tunable by controlling the number of layers and the size of LMPs. This hybrid design strategy offers a versatile platform for high-performance heating elements and thermal management systems.
