Design of Efficient and Mechanically Robust Anion Exchange Membrane for Water Electrolysis Achieved by Chemically Crosslinked Elastomers using Polyfluorene-Based Polymers

Abstract

Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is a promising technology for sustainable hydrogen production. Nevertheless, conventional anion exchange membranes (AEMs) still suffer from performance degradation under the harsh operating conditions. To overcome these challenges, we designed crosslinked elastomeric AEMs based on styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene combined with polyfluorene crosslinkers containing various aromatic spacers. By modulating the hydrophobicity of the crosslinkers, well-connected ionic pathways were formed, resulting in high hydroxide ion conductivity (124 mS cm⁻¹ at 80 °C) and excellent alkaline durability, retaining 97.6% of its conductivity after 1000 h of exposure to 1 M KOH at 80 °C. As a result, the AEMWE cell delivered 14.0 A cm⁻² at 2.0 V and 80 °C with a PtRu/C cathode and a Ni₂Fe anode catalyst. These results underscore the promise of the newly developed crosslinked elastomeric AEMs for advanced AEMWE.
