Abstract

Among the Global plastic waste, recycling is very low and the quality is often poor. For example, only 14% of the Global plastic waste has been recycled, and only 4% has been recycled in the case of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). This study presents a novel approach to converting LDPE waste into electrically conductive artificial graphite with high crystallinity with high carbon yield (89.4%) using stabilization and graphitization processes. LDPE-derived graphite (LGP) is comparable to artificial graphite which has twice as much crystallinity and electrical conductivity as natural graphite. Furthermore, the large crystalline domains due to the high crystallinity of LGP facilitates the exfoliation process, and enables the formation of larger graphene oxide (GO) with an average size of 4.1 ± 2.4 µm. The following study contributes significantly to LDPE waste management and provides a fabrication path for valuable carbon materials for broad industrial applications.
