Abstract
Excessive reliance on petroleum-based food packaging materials causes white pollution and microplastic accumulation, while agri-food waste disposal continues to increase, highlighting the need to upcycle such waste into value-added materials. In this study, chitosan (CS) and pectin (PEC) derived from agri-food waste were used as the film-forming matrix, and cinnamon essential oil (CEO), a natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agent, was encapsulated to develop an edible multifunctional film with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV-blocking properties. This film offers potential as a safe edible packaging material that can be consumed along with food, where CEO encapsulation effectively reduces volatilization, enabling sustained antimicrobial and UV-blocking effects, thereby enhancing film stability and extending the shelf life of packaged food products.
