Abstract
In tissue engineering, physical and biological stimuli, as well as culture environments, are the most crucial factors. Our research team has investigated the effects of these stimuli on cell behaviors, as well as tissue regeneration, using unique leaf-stacked structure (LSS) matrices (e.g. microparticles, sheets and 3D-printed scaffolds). We have demonstrated that the LSS can be easily fabricated using clinically feasible materials and procedures. The structure provides an environment that is conducive to the sustained release of bioactive factors and cell adhesion/differentiation. In recent, we have also developed a neutral buoyancy-based cell culture system capable of simulating microgravity (the space environment). Cell spheroids cultured in this system were found to faithfully reproduce cellular behavior observed in space. This presentation will discuss our current studies relating to LSS matrices and simulated microgravity.
