Improving Thermal Stability of Organic Solar Cells through Active Layer Crosslinking Using Azide-Functionalized Additives

Abstract

Organic solar cells (OSCs) now reach ~20% efficiency, but commercialization is hindered by poor thermal stability, partly due to diffusion of metal electrodes (e.g., Ag, MoO₃) into the active layer. To address this, we propose an active-layer crosslinking strategy using an azide-functionalized crosslinker. A donor–acceptor blend was mixed with the crosslinker, spin-coated, and UV-cured to form a covalently crosslinked network with higher structural density. Crosslinked devices showed improved thermal stability over non-crosslinked controls by suppressing bulk heterojunction phase separation and limiting metal diffusion under heat. These results emphasize free-volume control as a key lever for mitigating thermally induced degradation. The approach is compatible with interfacial engineering (e.g., MoO₃ densification), offering a practical route to more durable OSCs.
