Topology controlled polyglycerol as a macroinitiator platform for lactide ring opening polymerization

Abstract
In this study, topology-controlled polyglycerols (linear, hyperbranched, and branched cyclic) were synthesized, and lactide ring-opening polymerization (ROP) was carried out from the hydroxyl groups of polyglycerol as initiating sites to produce polyglycerol-graft-polylactide (PG-g-PLA). Because the hydroxyl groups in polyglycerol exist as both primary and secondary alcohols, ROP conditions were first optimized using ethanol (EtOH) and isopropanol (IPA) as model initiators. The effects of key parameters, including solvent and monomer concentration, were systematically investigated to identify polymerization conditions that achieve high conversion and low dispersity. Based on the established conditions, graft polymerization will be performed using topology-controlled polyglycerols as macroinitiators to elucidate topology-dependent graft formation and the resulting changes in material properties.
