Abstract
High β-phase poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films were fabricated using a thermally decomposable additive, 1,4-butadiene sulfone (BDS). BDS generates H2SO3 in situ via a retro-Diels-Alder reaction, inducing the all-trans PVDF configuration through hydrogen bonding. This allows spontaneous β-phase formation without mechanical drawing. A 95% β-phase fraction was achieved with 1.0 wt% additive, confirmed by Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM), SEM, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and 2D grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (2D-GIWAXS). The film exhibits superior properties: Ec= 50 MV/m, Pr= 5 µC/cm2, and d33≈ -25 pm/V. Finally, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) utilizing this film delivers 2.5 times higher output charge density than neat PVDF.
