Abstract

The mechanical properties of polymer electrolytes are critical for the stable operation of lithium metal batteries. However, molecular design strategies to enhance mechanical properties often induce changes in electrochemical characteristics. In this study, we propose a molecular design strategy for acrylate-based elastomeric electrolytes by incorporating methacrylate units with the same functional group. This approach introduces the effect of the α-methyl group on the mechanical properties of the polymer, while maintaining its electrochemical properties. As a result, the designed electrolytes exhibit selectively improved mechanical properties without significant changes in ionic conductivity. This strategy was concretely established through mechanical and electrochemical analyses at low temperatures, aiming for stable low-temperature operation. This work demonstrates a molecular design strategy for selectively tuning mechanical properties while maintaining electrochemical properties.
