Abstract

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials built from metal nodes and organic linkers. Their exceptionally high surface area, controllable pore architecture, and tunable chemical functionality enable gas storage/separation, catalysis, gas sensing, and carbon capture. Interest in monitoring volatile organic compounds (VOCs), food spoilage indicators, and breath biomarkers is increasing demand for sensors with high sensitivity/selectivity and long-term stability. High surface area of the MOFs enables reversible gas adsorption, while abundant reactive sites and post-synthetic modification promote selective interactions and improved stability under diverse conditions. Due to these exceptional characteristics, MOFs are emerging as versatile platforms for next-generation gas sensors. This work focuses on MOF-based VOC sensors, providing an in-depth evaluation of gas discrimination capabilities across various MOFs while outlining future research directions.
