Abstract
We present an ultrathin electrochromic device that couples viologen chemistry with strain-induced liquid crystal (LC) alignment. The ion gel comprises LC monomers, a UV-curable viologen, tetra(ethylene glycol)diacrylate as an elastic crosslinker, a polyurethane polymer matrix, and the ionic liquid. Ultrathin films with thicknesses as low as 20 µm were produced by UV curing while preserving mechanical robustness. Mechanical stretching drives a transition of LC domains from an isotropic to a planar-aligned state, promoting ion channeling and accelerating ion transport. The prepared device exhibits strain-dependent reductions in electrical resistance, enabling direct visual strain sensing. This work establishes a multifunctional, stretchable electrochromic polymer platform suited for wearable and smart optoelectronic applications.
