Abstract

A black-colored LiDAR-detectable coating system is developed by employing organic/polymeric–inorganic hybrid materials designed to deliver strong near-infrared (NIR) reflection while maintaining a true black appearance. The hybrid materials are constructed by integrating NIR-transparent, visible (VIS)-absorbing organic pigments with NIR-reflective inorganic metal oxides, thereby compensating each limitation. In the proposed optical architectures, the organic and polymeric component primarily governs VIS absorption to secure deep blackness, whereas the inorganic metal oxides act as NIR scatters that intensify black reflection through multiple internal scattering. The resulting black coating exhibits a true black tone (L* = 12) with high NIR reflectance exceeding 55 R% at 905 nm, which translates into clearly improved LiDAR detectability.
