Abstract
The demand to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions has accelerated sustainable waterborne coating technologies; however, achieving high gloss and mechanical strength remains a challenge. This study presents a novel acrylic polyol resin for waterborne 2K polyurethane clearcoats to address these limitations by employing a dual strategy. Internally crosslinked particles were synthesized via a seeded emulsion process with a reactive surfactant, suppressing surfactant migration and improving colloidal stability and film smoothness. A hydrophilically modified isocyanate was then incorporated to form 2K clearcoat. By optimizing the internal crosslinker structure and content to balance particle rigidity with film coalescence, the 20° gloss increased remarkably from 76.8 to 89.3. Furthermore, the system showed indentation hardness and modulus higher than commercial waterborne clearcoat. Overall, this work presents eco-friendly strategy for high-performance industrial clearcoats.
